Best Places to See Fall Foliage in Connecticut

The season of fall brings with it a lot of leaves. The scenery is usually a colorful one with leaves bearing yellow, orange, and red glowing across the region.

In Connecticut, the fall foliage starts to appear in late September and can last till early November. The forests and parks scattered across Connecticut are one of the best places to see the fall foliage.

5 Best Places to See Fall Foliage in Connecticut

Talcott Mountain State Park

Talcott Mountain State Park in Simsbury, Connecticut houses the 165ft Heublein Tower. The top of the tower offers a bird’s eye view of Farmington River Valley and several states.

Take a 1.25-mile hike up to the tower to have a scenic bird’s eye view of Talcott Mountain State Park. At this angle, you can catch a glimpse of New Hampshire that’s almost 80 miles away, the Berkshires, and the Long Island Sound. The tower, once a private home, now houses a museum and provides tours.

Until September 30, the tower is open from Thursdays to Mondays. From October 1 to October 29, it is open Wednesdays through Mondays but closed on Tuesdays. Open hours are between 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Mohawk State Forest

It is a publicly owned forest in Cornwall, CT.  Make the Lookout Tower in Mohawk State Forest a stop on your fall foliage expedition. From the top, panoramic views to the north and west include the Catskill, Taconic, and Berkshire mountain ranges. It is also a great place for wildlife sight-seeing.

Follow the Mattatuck and Mohawk trails to have a gaze at the splendor of fall foliage.

Haystack Mountain State Park

At Haystack Mountain State Park, you can drive through a twisting, mountain road and hike a rugged trail to reach the top of Haystack Mountain, at which you'll be rewarded with bird’s eye view, stunning views of the Berkshires, New York, and the Green Mountains.

The road only provides a halfway access to the summit, so to get to the 34-foot observation tower at the top of the 1716-foot-high mountain, you'll have to hike about half a mile to get to the summit. The park also offers picnic tables.

Pachaug State Forest

Pachaug State Forest, established with an expanse of over 20,000 acres cut across six tons, makes it the largest state forest in Connecticut.

The forest consists of two areas which are the Chapman and the Green Falls Area. To enjoy fall foliage, your best option is to explore the Chapman Area where the Mt Misery overlook is located, which is the highest point in the area at 441 feet. The overlook is accessible by car or trail. The features a lot of fun activities like motorcycling, horseback riding, camping, mountain biking, and freshwater fishing.

Essex Steam Train and Riverboat

The Essex Steam Train and Riverboat takes you on a 2.5-hour, 12-mile journey through the Connecticut River Valley by both and train. The train starts its journey from the historic Essex station.

Afterward, you spend a little over an hour of the trip traveling down the Connecticut River on the Becky Thatcher riverboat, where you will find photo-worthy foliage. (Tours run on weekends at 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 2 p.m.; $29 for adults and $19 for children). This is a great weekend getaway for fall.
